Why Is My Fan Blowing Hot Air? (And What to Do About It)

Ceiling fans have a summer and winter setting. In summer, the fan should spin counterclockwise (when viewed from below), pushing air straight down to create a wind-chill effect on your skin. In winter, it runs clockwise, pulling air up along the walls and gently redistributing the warm air trapped near the ceiling — without creating a draft.

If your ceiling fan is spinning clockwise in summer, it’s moving air upward instead of down, eliminating the wind-chill effect entirely. Check the direction switch on the motor housing and flip it to counterclockwise.

3. The fan doesn’t move enough air for the room size

Fan airflow is measured in CFM (cubic feet per minute). A weak fan in a large or poorly-ventilated bedroom doesn’t move enough air volume to produce a meaningful cooling effect. You feel a breeze near the fan, but the actual room temperature doesn’t drop.

Why your fan blows hot air at night specifically

  1. Open a window on the opposite side of the room from your fan
  2. Point the fan outward (exhausting hot air out, not blowing air in)
  3. Do this 20–30 minutes before bed to flush the stored heat
  4. Once the room temperature drops, reposition the fan to blow across your bed
